SSB Interview Dress Code Guide

SSB assessors are not judging your clothes, but appearance still matters at the margins — being appropriately, neatly dressed removes one more thing for the board to notice negatively, and it signals discipline and self-presentation, which are part of what is being assessed throughout the process. The catch is that the SSB is not one uniform event: screening day, the personal interview, and the two days of GTO outdoor tasks each call for different clothing. Turning up in the wrong outfit for a physical task day, or being under-dressed for the interview, is an avoidable distraction. General Principles

Across all days, the guiding idea is neat, conservative, and functional. Nothing flashy, nothing branded with loud logos, nothing that restricts movement during physical tasks. Clothes should be clean and well-fitted — not overly tight or oversized. Footwear should be broken-in, not brand new, so you are not dealing with blisters during outdoor tasks.

Screening Day and Interview Day (Formal Wear)

On screening day and on the day of your personal interview, formal wear is expected, similar to a job interview.

For men: a full-sleeve formal shirt (light, solid colours such as white, light blue, or light grey work well) tucked into formal trousers (black, navy, or grey), a plain belt, polished formal shoes, and neatly combed, short hair. A tie is optional for the interview day but not compulsory; if worn, keep it simple and matching. Avoid casual footwear, jeans, or t-shirts on these days.

For women: formal salwar-kameez, saree, or formal trousers with a shirt/blouse, in solid or subtly patterned fabric — avoid overly bright colours or heavy embellishment. Hair should be tied back neatly. Minimal or no jewellery, and light or no makeup. Formal, closed footwear such as sandals with a low heel or formal flats.

GTO Days (Physical/Outdoor Wear)

Days 3 and 4 involve outdoor obstacle tasks, group exercises, and running, so formal wear is neither expected nor practical.

For both men and women: a comfortable t-shirt or tracksuit top, jogging bottoms or trackpants, and sports shoes with good grip that you have already worn in (never wear brand-new shoes for an obstacle task day). Most SSB centres will specify a house colour or track suit requirement on arrival — follow their instructions exactly. Keep hair tied back or short so it does not interfere with obstacle tasks. Avoid loose jewellery, watches with delicate straps, or anything that could catch or break during physical activity.

Psychology Test Day (Day 2)

Since Day 2 is spent seated indoors writing tests, smart-casual, comfortable clothing is fine — you do not need formal wear, but avoid anything too casual like shorts or slogan t-shirts, since you are still on centre premises among assessors.

Conference Day (Day 5)

Conference is brief and formal, so wear the same formal outfit you wore for the interview day, kept clean and pressed for this final appearance.

Packing Checklist

Pack for all five days in advance so you are not scrambling at the last minute or relying on ironing facilities at the centre.

Grooming and Personal Hygiene

Dress code is only part of appearance — grooming matters just as much. Keep facial hair neatly trimmed or clean-shaven (a full, well-maintained beard is acceptable at most centres if kept tidy; an unkempt one is not), nails trimmed short, and avoid strong perfume or deodorant, since you will be in close group settings for hours at a time. Carry a small grooming kit (comb, nail clipper, a spare pair of socks) so you can freshen up between the more physically demanding GTO tasks and the next activity of the day.

What to Avoid Regardless of the Day

Some items are best left at home entirely: flashy accessories, sunglasses worn indoors, ripped or faded clothing, clothing with political, religious, or provocative graphics, and excessive cologne or perfume. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or expensive personal electronics beyond what is needed, since accommodation is often shared and centres are not equipped like hotels for securing valuables.

Weather and Regional Considerations

SSB centres are spread across different climates — hill stations can turn cold in the evenings even in summer, while some plains centres get very hot during the day. Check the general climate of your specific centre's location and season before packing, and carry a light thermal layer or umbrella accordingly, since outdoor GTO tasks proceed regardless of moderate weather and you do not want clothing choices to become a distraction from the tasks themselves.

Uniform and Standard Issue Items at Some Centres

A number of centres issue a common house-colour t-shirt, tracksuit, or bib for GTO days once you are grouped into teams, which you wear over or instead of your own sportswear for identification during group tasks. Follow the centre's instructions on this exactly, and do not assume your own tracksuit colour choice will be allowed to override an issued uniform requirement.
